The Why...

This blog is part of my proposed sabbatical project that will focus on podcasts[1] and digital storytelling[2], two types of social media[3]. Social media is sharing stories and experiences, or discussing information primarily by using Internet-based tools that integrates technology, text, pictures, videos, audio and social interaction as a way to share meaning among communities. Podcasts and digital storytelling are only two methods by which communicators deliver their messages to a diverse but wired[4] population. A wired population primarily uses the internet to send and receive information and messages. By investigating and evaluating these podcasts and digital storytelling as social media that are revolutionizing the communication industry, the proposed research should enhance my ability to stay current in my professional communication field. In addition, the proposed research will in the future prepare students to become more employable in a competitive market by preparing them to use social media as tools to communicate with diverse populations. Furthermore, to aid in assessment, a learning outcome in communication classes will be initiated to monitor if the students are adept at using social media to communicate.

In order to explore the different social media I wanted a topic I could blog about, create a digital story and explore other social media--thus the Dueber-Hampden Watch Factory was selected.

In addition, I was awarded an individual artist's grant from the Arts in Stark (Canton, Ohio) to fund in part the development of the digital story about the Dueber-Hampden Watch Factory.

[1] Podcast is an audio broadcast that has been converted to an MP3 file or other audio file format for playback in a digital music player. Although many podcasts are played on a regular computer, the original idea was to listen on a portable device (Ipod); hence, the "pod" name from "iPod.” Although podcasts are mostly verbal, they may contain music, images and video. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and "building" of shared meaning among communities, as people share their stories and experiences.
